Tolbachik volcano (Kamchatka, Russia): cone collapse and lava flood

Monday Dec 24, 2012 11:05 AM | BY: TOMPFEIFFER

Significant changes have occurred at the eruption of Tolbachik last night as our colleagues from Activolcans.fr informed. While the main cone has ceased explosive strombolian activity and only feeds a larger lava flow directed to the west, a second cone, built on the east side of Tolbachik Dol, offered a surprise. At about 1 am this night, the cone, which until then contained a strongly boiling lava lake, collapsed partially and and released its contents as a flood-like lava flow. By 7 am, the new flow had traveled 5 km to the east and is still alimented.
KVERT received pictures taken by spectators at the event will likely post some pictures soon.
