Tolbachik volcano (Kamchatka) eruption update: eruption has started to decrease

The eruption intensity has begun to decrease over the past days, although tremor is still high and lava flows are still active. The thermal anomalies have started to become smaller, indicating less lava output than before. They also confirm the reported flash flood of lava to the east reported earlier.

Significant changes have occurred at the eruption of Tolbachik last night as our colleagues from Activolcans.fr informed. While the main cone has ceased explosive strombolian activity and only feeds a larger lava flow directed to the west, a second cone, built on the east side of Tolbachik Dol, offered a surprise. At about 1 am this night, the cone, which until then contained a strongly boiling lava lake, collapsed partially and and released its contents as a flood-like lava flow. KVERT reported that the amplitude of volcanic tremor was almost 3 times as strong as a week ago. Possibly, magmatic channels to the surface have narrowed with time while lava effusion rate is remaining stable. [more]
