Tunagurahua volcano (Ecuador), activity update: lahars

The IG reported that clouds mostly prevented visual observations of Tungurahua during 3-9 September. On 3 September, a small lahar carried blocks down river drainages to the NW. Steam plumes rose 200 m above the crater on 6 September. On 8 September, a lahar descended a drainage to the S and carried blocks up to 50 cm in diameter.

IG reported steam and ash-and-steam plumes from Tungurahua that rose to altitudes of 5.8-8 km (19,000-26,200 ft) a.s.l. during 27 February - 1 March. Ash plumes drifted NW, W, SW, and SE, ashfall was reported in areas to the SW on 27 February. Lahars or mudflows descended the Mapayacu and Choglontus drainages in the SW, and drainages in the Pampas sector to the S on 27 and 28 February. ... [more]

Tungurahua volcano's activity has been increasing over the past days. The Ecuadorian Insititute of Geophysics (IG) reports an increase in the frequency and size of ash explosions. IG interprets the present style of activity as related to constant degassing in an open-conduit system filled with vicsous magma. Sronger explosions alternate with near-constant emissions of gas and ash. ... [more]
