Tungurahua volcano (Ecuador) - Smithsonian / USGS Weekly Volcanic Activity Report for 7 August-13 August 2013 (New Activity / Unrest)

IG reported that seismic activity at Tungurahua was moderate to high during 7-13 August; the seismic network detected long-period earthquakes indicating fluid movement and some emissions. Although cloud cover mostly prevented visual observations of the crater, plumes were occasionally observed. On 8 August an ash plume rose 2 km and drifted W, and ash fell in Choglontus (SW).
A small steam plume rose 100 m and drifted SW the next day. Minor vapor emissions were noted on 11 and 13 August.

During the past days, a further increase in activity of the volcano occurred, characterized by the generation of large explosions and a constant ash eruption column, and several small to big explosions that generated strong vibrations and rattled windows in villages near the volcano. This morning's seismic signal from Tungurahua (RETU station, IGPEN)

An increase in activity has occurred since yesterday. For 24 July, IGPEN reports an eruption column of steam and ash reaching 5 km above the crater drifting into westerly directions.
