Tungurahua volcano news & eruption updates:

Tungurahua volcano (Ecuador) activity update: stronger eruptions since Friday night

Sun, 4 Dec 2011, 08:07
08:07 AM |
After a few days with constant, but minor ash emission, the intensity of Tungurahua's eruption has increased during the night between Friday and Saturday (2-3 Dec), IGEPN from Quito reports.
Explosions produced ash plumes rising 3-5 km above the crater and produced small pyroclastic flows of app. 500 m length on the western flank. Ejections of incandescent lava blocks to up to 1 km distance were observed. Ash fall is occurring in nearby villages, inclucing Palitahua, Runtún, Cusúa, Pillate and Juive. Strong explosion sounds are heard in Baños, Cusúa, Runtún and Pillate, where shock waves rattle doors and windows.
The lack of rain has (so-far) prevented the formation of dangerous mud flows (lahars).

Tungurahua, Equador´s most active volcano and one of its most dangerous ones, has started a new eruption. Hundreds of people living in nearby villages have been evacuated.
The eruption is explosive and huge clouds of ash and hot gas rising up to an altitude of aprox. 4 km.
It has also produced pyrocalstic flows (avalanches of hot gas, ash and blocks of hot lava) that were travelling about 500 m to northwestern flanks of the volcano.
