Tungurahua volcano (Ecuador), eruption update: explosions and ash emissions continue at lower intensity

Friday Dec 21, 2012 11:05 AM | BY: T

Activity has been quieter compared to yesterday, but the volcano continues to produce a constant ash column and intermittent explosions of small to moderate size, some of which are accompanied by loud cannon-shot bangs and roars.
During the night, incandescent bombs were seen thrown up to 200 m above the crater and landing on the upper slopes of the volcano.

The activity today was characterized by numerous explosions of moderate size with loud gun-shot noises and roars heard in all towns near the volcano. Some of the explosions caused buildings vibrate. Continuous volcanic tremor was measured and localized at depth of 3-4 km beneath the crater. During the night, glowing bombs were seen ejected 3-400 m above the crater and rolling down for about 1 km on the volcano's slopes. ... [more]

Tungurahua continued to produce a sustained ash column rising 2-3 km and intermittent stronger explosions. Several pyroclastic flows occurred yesterday (at 05:00 am, 07:47 and 15:30 local time), the one at 07:47 reaching a length of up to 4 km distance near La Hacienda. The deposits of the flows were reported seen in the gorge and reaching the plain in the area between the Mandur and La Hacienda. ... [more]
