Tungurahua volcano (Ecuador) activity update: sporadic weak explosions

Wednesday Dec 26, 2012 11:05 AM | BY: T

Over the past days, the volcano has calmed down a bit compared to the previous week. Glow could be seen during the night from the summit where the lava dome continues to grow.
Some weak to moderate explosions, accompanied by roars and occasional loud gun-shot noises, and ash emissions are still occurring.
The volcano has been covered by clouds most of the time, but IG could occasionally see that a permanent column of steam and ash is rising about 2 km above the crater and drifts to the NW. During yesterday afternoon a slight ashfall was reported from the Choglontús area.

The activity today was characterized by numerous explosions of moderate size with loud gun-shot noises and roars heard in all towns near the volcano. Some of the explosions caused buildings vibrate. Continuous volcanic tremor was measured and localized at depth of 3-4 km beneath the crater. During the night, glowing bombs were seen ejected 3-400 m above the crater and rolling down for about 1 km on the volcano's slopes. ... [more]

Several pyroclastic flows occurred yesterday (at 05:00 am, 07:47 and 15:30 local time), the one at 07:47 reaching a length of up to 4 km distance near La Hacienda. The deposits of the flows were reported seen in the gorge and reaching the plain in the area between the Mandur and La Hacienda. ... [more]

During last night and early today explosions and volcanic tremor continued to be recorded. Pulsating lava fountains and strong strombolian-type ejections of incandescent blocks were observed at night with fountains reaching a height of 1 km and bombs landing on the upper cone.
