Tungurahua volcano (Ecuador) activity update: sporadic weak explosions
Over the past days, the volcano has calmed down a bit compared to the previous week. Glow could be seen during the night from the summit where the lava dome continues to grow.

Some weak to moderate explosions, accompanied by roars and occasional loud gun-shot noises, and ash emissions are still occurring.
The volcano has been covered by clouds most of the time, but IG could occasionally see that a permanent column of steam and ash is rising about 2 km above the crater and drifts to the NW. During yesterday afternoon a slight ashfall was reported from the Choglontús area.

Activity has been quieter compared to yesterday, but the volcano continues to produce a constant ash column and intermittent explosions of small to moderate size, some of which are accompanied by loud cannon-shot bangs and roars. read all

An explosion at 01:50 (local time) this night was followed by an increase of seismic and visible activity. Between 02:00 and 04:00 am, explosions followed at intervals of only 5 minutes and produced loud cannon-shot noises and shock waves, and ejected incandescent blocks of various sizes. read all

The activity today was characterized by numerous explosions of moderate size with loud gun-shot noises and roars heard in all towns near the volcano. Some of the explosions caused buildings vibrate. Continuous volcanic tremor was measured and localized at depth of 3-4 km beneath the crater. Tungurahua continued to produce a sustained ash column rising 2-3 km and intermittent stronger explosions. Several pyroclastic flows occurred yesterday (at 05:00 am, 07:47 and 15:30 local time), the one at 07:47 reaching a length of up to 4 km distance near La Hacienda. During last night and early today explosions and volcanic tremor continued to be recorded. Pulsating lava fountains and strong strombolian-type ejections of incandescent blocks were observed at night with fountains reaching a height of 1 km and bombs landing on the upper cone. In the morning, a small small pyroclastic flow descended through the gorge of La Hacienda. read all
