Tungurahua volcano (Ecuador) activity update activity update: steaming

IG reported a decrease in activity from Tungurahua during 4-10 January.
On 4 January steam plumes rose as high as 500 m above the crater and drifted W. Additional steam plumes observed on 8 January also drifted W.

Tungurahua volcano's activity has calmed down. Since 9 December, its activity has consisted only of steaming. No larger explosions or pyroclastic flows have been observed, the Ecuadorian Geohpysical Institute reports in its latest bulletin. Gas measurements show a significant decrease in SO2 emission and deformation shows no indication of new magma rising in the conduit. [more]

Tungurahua volcano in Ecuador has entered a phase of intense eruptions, producing ash clouds of more than 3 km height and showering the upper slopes of the volcano with incandescent bombs. Significant ash fall is occurring in the downwind areas of the volcano, and an exclusion zone has been established around the volcano. [more]
