Ulawun volcano (New Britain, Papua New Guinea) activity update: Significant explosive eruption: ash to 15km (50,000ft), evacuations

The volcano has suddenly had its largest eruption since the major eruption of 2000. Ash plumes have risen to 50,000ft, and the Aviation Colour Code has been raised to Red.
Fortunately, an eruption alert was sent out yesterday; evacuations have been taking place today.
More details to come as the situation develops.

There have been no reports of further activity at Ulawun since the isolated small ash emissions on October 4. Renewed activity is possible, though the volcano has been very quiet for the past year.

A new eruption of the volcano has just occurred, with steam and ash plumes up to 4.5km (15,000ft). This is typical of Ulawun's eruptive behaviour.
