Unrest has once again escalated and a new phase of major eruptive activity occurred between around 10:00 and 11:00 UTC today, sending a mushroom cloud to 19km, as in the VEI 4 eruption in June. This event appears to have been smaller and has now ended- satellite imagery shows the ash cloud drifting away from the volcano. The Rabaul Volcano Observatory sent out an alert of increasing seismicity yesterday, with more advanced warning than in June, which reflects the smaller size of this event. [more]
