Background
The 8-km-wide Ureparapara Island is topped by a 5-km-wide erosional caldera that is breached by the sea on the NE. Sapper (1917) states that Ureparapara must have still been active in 1872, but the the latest activity occurred during the Pleistocene (Ash et al. 1980).---
