Veniaminof volcano (Alaska Peninsula, USA) activity update

Tue, 24 Sep 2013, 16:23
16:23 PM | BY: T
The Alaska Volcano Observatory recently lowered the alert status from Orange/Watch to Yellow/Advisory. Although some weak tremor continues to be recorded under the caldera, no more eruptive activity seems to have taken place during the past weeks. The lava flows and the new cinder cone that was built inside the caldera are now cooling.

The eruption seems to be ending. AVO reports that "seismic tremor continues though at decreased levels compared to prior weeks. No unusual activity was observed in webcam images. These data indicate that the effusion of lava from the active vent may be ongoing though diminished." ... read all

Current seismic recording from Veniaminof (VNHG station, AVO)
A phase of strong continuous tremor occurred between yesterday noon and this morning (local time), possibly indicating another paroxysm with lava fountaining and associated ash emissions. Cloud cover prevented direct observations. ... read all

Current seismic recording from Veniaminof (VNHG station, AVO)
The eruption continues at moderate levels, as evidenced by continuous seismic tremor and elevated surface temperatures in satellite views. Effusion and fountaining of lava from the active vent are likely ongoing as is low level ash emissions that are, at this time, restricted to an area within a few miles of the vent. (AVO daily update) ... read all

Current seismic recording from Veniaminof (VNHG station, AVO)
Activity has decreased compared to the strong episode between 30 August and 2 September. Continuous seismic tremor suggests that lava effusion, accompanied by minor ash emission, continues. ... read all

Brief clear view of Veniaminof with visible plume last night (Perryville webcam, FAA)
Eruptive activity remains elevated. Strong continuous tremor suggests ongoing lava fountaining associated with lava flows and ash emissions. A plume of ash was reported to drift eastward at an altitude of 15,000 ft (4.5 km). ... read all
