Veniaminof volcano (Alaska Peninsula, USA) activity update

20:23 PM | BY: TSeismic activity remains elevated, but constant. Elevated surface temperatures consistent with the continued extrusion of lava were observed in several images during clear periods over the past day. No ash detected. (AVO daily update)

The Alaska Volcano Observatory recently lowered the alert status from Orange/Watch to Yellow/Advisory. Although some weak tremor continues to be recorded under the caldera, no more eruptive activity seems to have taken place during the past weeks. The eruption seems to be ending. AVO reports that "seismic tremor continues though at decreased levels compared to prior weeks. No unusual activity was observed in webcam images. These data indicate that the effusion of lava from the active vent may be ongoing though diminished." ... read all

A phase of strong continuous tremor occurred between yesterday noon and this morning (local time), possibly indicating another paroxysm with lava fountaining and associated ash emissions. Cloud cover prevented direct observations. ... read all

The eruption continues at moderate levels, as evidenced by continuous seismic tremor and elevated surface temperatures in satellite views. Effusion and fountaining of lava from the active vent are likely ongoing as is low level ash emissions that are, at this time, restricted to an area within a few miles of the vent.
