Wednesday, Nov 21, 2018
The ongoing eruption at Veniaminof (which began on September 4) has intensified today, with a significant increase in seismicity and now-continuous ash emissions to 4.5km (15,000ft). AVO has raised the Aviation Color Code and Alert Level to RED/WARNING. Much higher ash emissions are possible, though relatively uncommon in historical time. Strong explosive eruptions occurred in 1939, 1956 and particularly in 1983 when ash rose to 25,000ft. Note that a very large eruption is extremely unlikely even though Veniaminof had a 50km3 caldera-forming eruption 3,700 years ago. [more]
