Volcano activity world-wide summary 31 Oct - 6 Nov 2012

Thursday Nov 08, 2012 16:00 PM | BY: T

The new Smithsonian / USGS Weekly Volcanic Activity Report was published today and is summarized as follows:

-- new activity ---

Kizimen (Kamchatka): lava flows from summit and E flank, strong gas-and-steam activity, and hot avalanches, occasional explosions

--- ongoing activity ---

Fuego (Guatemala): explosions ejected incandescent material 100 m above the lava dome, and produced ash plumes that rose almost 500 m and drifted 10 km SW. A lava flow traveled 350 m SSW down the Ceniza drainage. On 3 November heavy rain caused lahars that traveled down the Ceniza drainage, carrying tree branches and 2-m-wide blocks. During 3-6 November explosions generate ash plumes that rose 150-450 m and drifted W and NW. The lava flow increased to 600-800 m length during 3-6 Nov and produced incandescent block avalanches that reached vegetated areas.
Galeras (Colombia): fluctuating seismicity at slightly lower levels compared to the previous week, low SO2 emissiong, gas and ash plumes on 30 October and 1 November.

Karymski (Kamchatka): moderate seismic activity, possible ash plumes to 3.5 km (11,500 ft) a.s.l, thermal anomaly visible on 27 Oct.

Kilauea (Hawaii): lava lakes rising and dropping in Halema'uma'u, lava flows in Royal Gardens subdivision and across the coastal plain up to 1 km from coast, Pu'u 'O'o: active perched lava lake in NE pit, spattering and small lava flows from various crater vents.

Manam (Papua New Guinea): ash explosion to an altitude of 3 km (10,000 ft) a.s.l.

Nyiragongo (DR Congo): strong gas plume on 1 Nov.

Popocatépetl (Mexico): gas-and-steam emissions with some ash, incandescence from the crater observed at night.

Reventador (Ecuador): although cloud cover often prevented observations, plumes were observed almost daily. During 31 October-1 November and 3 November plumes rose 1.5-3 km above the crater and drifted NW. At about 0400 on 5 November a steam-and-ash plume rose 3 km. An ash plume rose 2 km and drifted NW at 0600.

Sakurajima (Japan): explosions with ash plumes up to 2.4 km altitude, tephra ejected as far as 1.8 km from the crater, small explosion from Minami-dake Crater during 29-30 October.

Shiveluch (Kamchatka): viscous lava flow from lava dome, hot avalanches, occasional explosions.
