Petrified giant tree on Lesbos
Over millions of years, rainwater has seeped through the ash layers of ash and dissolved silica and other minerals from the volcanic layers. The wood of the trees was replaced by silicates.
Only about twenty years ago, large petrified forests were discovered by accident in the vicinity of the village of Sigri, where inhabitants wondered why some rocks looked like precious stones and wood at the same time.
Today, the region where once thick forests grew is a desert-like landscape. Only eroded remnants of huge lava domes, craters, caldera and - at 85-90 degrees C temperature - the hottest thermal springs in Europe testimony of the past volcanic history.
Few know that Lesbos is a volcanic island and for the untrained eye, only an expert in geology will see where the ancient volcanic vents were located. Tobias Schorr guides you around the famous "petrified forest" of Sigri, and shows you the remnants of volcanic edifices, and helps you discover minerals such as agate and opal which have formed as a result of alteration of volcanic deposits with time.
Lesbos has not only dramatic ancient volcanic landscapes, but also breathtaking mountain and coastal scenery and numerous charming villages. We will have breaks to taste the local cuisine, and of course, this includes the "national drink" of the island - the famous Ouzo, which comes from here.
Our tour leads you on charming paths through forests, river valleys and onto the highest peaks of the island. In the spring, Lesbos is a blooming paradise, and you can find many rare plant and animal species.
On this pilot tour with Tobias, you will discover the hidden natural treasures of the island of Lesbos. There is plenty of time for spontaneous activities.
Since this trip is combined with Athens, you also get an intimate impression of this European capital, which, despite the crisis, hasn't lost any of its charm. Come and see that Greece is still is a wonderful travel destination! The Greeks and we are looking forward to welcoming you, dear visitor.
