Summary of world-wide volcanic activity 21-27 March

Thursday Mar 29, 2012 12:58 PM | BY: T

No major eruptions have occurred during the past week. Iceland, Santorini and Etna remain quiet. In Indonesia, Krakatau and Semeru are very active, Ijen remains at high alert. Soufrière Hills on Montserrat seems to be waking up, while Puyehue in Chile's eruption is fading.
The new Smithsonian / USGS Weekly Volcanic Activity Report for the past week is ummarized as follows:

-- new activity ---

Ijen (East Java, Indonesia): increased water temperature, strong degassing and steaming
Iliamna (Alaska): slightly increased seismic activity
Nevado del Ruiz (Colombia): seismic activity, strong degassing, alert remains at III
Pacaya (Guatemala): some changes in seismic activity detected, degassing
Soufriere Hills (Montserrat): new fumaroles, tremor and phreatic ash eruptions

--- ongoing activity ---

Cleveland (Aleutians): alert lowered, no recent eruptions or apparent lava dome growth
Karmysky (Kamchatka): occasional ash eruptions, thermal anomaly at summit crater
Kilauea (Hawai'i): active lava lake in Halema'uma'u crater, incandescence visible from a small pit on the NE edge and a small spatter cone on the SE edge of the Pu'u 'O'o crater floor, and on the upper part of the lava-tube system on the E flank. Lava flows advance down the pali and across the coastal plain.
Kizimen (Kamchatka): moderate seismic activity, large lava flow on the E flank and accompanying hot avalanches
Popocatépetl (Mexico): steam-and-gas emissions and incandescence from the crater was visible at night. Small ash emissions occurred on 14 and 18 March, accompanied by increased incandescence from the crater.
Puyehue-Cordón Caulle (Chile): ash plumes becoming smaller, mostly no higher than 1 km above the crater. Incandescence from the crater observed during 23-27 March.
Reventador (Ecuador): incandescence at crater, steaming, occasional small ash eruptions
Sakura-jima (Japan): occasional explosions, ash plumes rising to 1.8-2.7 km altitude
Sangay (Ecuador): occasional explosions, ash plume to 8 km altitude on 22 March
Santa Maria (Guatemala): ash exposions, lava flows from lava dome, small avalanches and pyroclastic flows
Shiveluch (Kamchatka): ash eruptions to 5-6 km altitude, lava flow in 2000 crater, growing lava dome
Tungurahua (Ecuador): strong steaming, incandescence from the crater and roaring noises on 21 March, increasing ash emissions since 26 March rising 3 km above crater. Lahars during 24-25 March triggered by heavy rain, reaching the Pampas area to the S and flooding in the sectors of Puela (8 km SW).
