Kilauea volcano (Hawai´i) activity update: lava still flowing into the sea

Fri, 10 Nov 2006, 10:21

Out team partner Phil on Hawaii sends a report from a recent visit to the lava flow area:

I returned to East Ka`ili`ili via Kalapana, where a tube system in the Campout flow is feeding one of two ocean entries (the other is fed by tube system in the PKK flow to East Lae`apuki, and is much more remote). There are very few surface flows anywhere on the coastal plain, but the skylight near the ocean entry is still present and has grown slightly larger, allowing a view of a river of lava flowing around a bend in the tube a few tens of seconds before it meets the ocean. Unfortunately this was impossible to photograph at the time... The ocean entry continues its typical explosive activity, with some fireworks bursts of more than 10m of diameter and height. See  pictures below, and of the beautiful sunrise by the entry plume! (Also the plume from Pu`u `O`o was pretty impressive!)
