Thursday Apr 19, 2012 16:19 PM | BY: T

The past week was characterized by an important increase of Popocatéptl volcano's activity in Mexico and one of the Etna's most spectacular recent episodes of fire fountaining.
The new Smithsonian / USGS Weekly Volcanic Activity Report was published today and is summarized as follows:

-- new activity ---

Cleveland (Aleutians): 2 small explosions detected on 13 April
Popocatépetl (Mexico): increased activity since 13 April, large explosions during 13-16 April
Rincon de la Vieja (Costa Rica): small phreatic eruption within and around the hot acidic lake of Rincon de la Vieja at 1400 on 14 April

--- ongoing activity ---

Etna (Sicily, Italy): New SEC paroxysm nr 24 on 12 April
Karmysky (Kamchatka): possible small ash eruptions, thermal anomaly at summit crater
Kilauea (Hawai'i): active lava lake in Halema'uma'u crater, active lava flows advancing on coastal plain
Nevado del Ruiz (Colombia): increased seismic activity, shallow earthquakes, strong degassing, eruption warning
Pagan (Mariana Islands): steaming, no further ash emissions detected
Puyehue-Cordón Caulle (Chile): almost daily small plumes rising up to 1 km, incandescence at crater observed from 10-11 April
Sakurajima (Japan): ongoing occasional vulcanian eruptions
Shiveluch (Kamchatka): continuing strong ash explosions up to 7-8 km altitude, viscous lava flow in 2010 crater
Tungurahua (Ecuador): intermittent explosions, ash venting, ash fall
