Villarrica volcano (Chile): volcano increases activity
Wednesday Mar 18, 2015 07:59 AM | BY: T
Mild strombolian activity at VIllarrica last night
Activity at the volcano is again increasing, which could again culminate in another paroxysm. Since 14 March, degassing and seismic activity have been observed to rise. Phases of mild strombolian activity appeared again on 16 March.
SERNAGEOMIN described projections of incandescent material to up to 150 m. ONEMI and SERNAGEOMIN maintain alert level yellow (which might be raised in the case the activity further increases). A 3 km exclusion zone is in place around the summit.
Wednesday, Mar 04, 2015
After the violent paroxysm during Mon-Tue, the volcano has calmed down again. No explosions could be seen on the webcam, only what might be a short-lived lava flow and/or strombolian activity during the night.
Tuesday, Mar 03, 2015
Activity increased to a paroxysmal eruption this morning, as strombolian explosions merged into sustained tall lava fountains several hundreds of meters tall, feeding lava flows on the upper slopes of the volcano. ...
Tuesday, Feb 17, 2015
Activity from the summit vent has increased, with an average of 5 strombolian-type explosions per minute observed recently. Bright incandescence is visible above the crater. ...
Saturday, Feb 07, 2015
Magma has reached the surface of the inner summit crater. Strombolian activity has formed a new small cone containing a small lava lake in its open vent. This followed a strong increase in volcanic tremor to about 20 times background level starting since Thursday. Glow from the volcano's top has become visible at night. ...
Thursday, Dec 18, 2014
Increasing activity at the volcano was reported by the Projecto Observación Visual Volcán Villarrica (POVI), suggesting that deep-seated strombolian activity has resumed in the summit crater. ...
