Villarrica volcano (Chile): increasing activity
Tuesday Aug 23, 2016 17:10 PM | BY: T
Glow from Villarrica's summit this morning (SERNAGEOMIN webcam)
MODIS thermal signal from Villarrica volcano (MIROVA)
The volcano has increased its activity during the past two weeks: glow from the summit has reappeared in early August and become more pronounced lately.
This suggests a rise of the magma column in the conduit where a small lava lake is often present (typical for the volcano) and/or spattering or small strombolian activity.
Satellite-based measurements of heat output also show an increase recently.

A small lava lake is active inside the volcano's summit crater. Vigorous degassing produces violent convection and occasional explosions that eject liquid lava spatter outside the inner pit crater. ... [more]
Thursday, Jun 04, 2015
OVDAS-SERNAGEOMIN reported no significant changes at Villarrica during 20-26 May. Seismicity had significantly decreased, although the data continued to indicate small explosions and degassing from the lava lake. ... [more]
Tuesday, May 12, 2015
Mild activity continues - a small lava lake remains active inside the vent of the inner summit crater producing steaming, small strombolian explosions, and related ash emissions. ... [more]
Friday, Apr 24, 2015
SERNAGEOMIN reported weak strombolian activity during the past days and the presence of a small oscillating lava lake in the summit crater's inner pit. ... [more]
Thursday, Apr 02, 2015
OVDAS-SERNAGEOMIN reported that during 24-25 March gas-and-ash emissions at Villarrica decreased but the magnitude of the continuous seismic tremor slightly increased. Crater incandescence overnight was observed. ... [more]

Stromboli volcano photos
: The lighthouse of the Thyrrhenian Sea - thanks to its typical, regular explosions that coined the term "strombolian activity", Stromboli is one of the most famous and photogenic volcanoes in the world.
Batu Tara photos
: A remote island in the Flores Sea of Indonesia formed by a single volcano that has been in strong strombolian eruption for years. We regularly lead expeditions to there where we camp several days to observe it.
Volcano Special expedition
: Special tour to see the ongoing eruption of Shivleuch volcano. Max 6 participants, 5 nights on location, accompanied by our team and local volcanologists. Sign up deadline Sun 24 Feb 2019!
