Volcanic activity world-wide 9 September 2012: San Cristobal, Apoyeque, Popocatépetl, Nevado del Ruiz, Galeras, Machin, White Island

Sunday Sep 09, 2012 19:55 PM | BY: T

The news have been dominated by the new eruption of San Cristobal volcano in Nicaragua. As of now, the eruption seems to be ending or pausing, as there is only little if any explosive ash emission still going on.

Most other volcanoes around the world have not shown significant changes in their activity.

Elevated numbers of earthquakes continue to be recorded at Apoyeque volcano also in Nicaragua.

Cerro Machin experienced a 3.6 magnitude quake at 07:32 local time 9 Sep at 3.2 km depth beneath the summit of the volcano. Seismicity had been particularly elevated since 8 Sep and stronger-than-normal seismic activity has been following the quake. This is the most energetic seismic activity at the volcano for probably more than a year.

Galeras has some very small earthquakes visible on recent seismograms.

Numerous seismic events and perhaps a few weak tremor pulses are visible at Nevado del Ruiz volcano.

Popocatépetl: The number of weak steam explosions has increased to slightly more than one per hour again, but direct observations were not possible due to cloud cover. NOAA's satellite images show a significant SO2 plume from the volcano as usual.

Some elevated seismic activity and weak pulses of tremor are still occurring at White Island, but there have not been any recent ash emissions.

Seismicity continues to be elevated at Little Sitkin volcano in the Aleutians.
