Volcanic activity world-wide 10 September 2012: San Cristobal, Apoyeque, Telica, Little Sitkin, El Hierro, Krafla, Fuego, Pacaya, Santiaguito, Popocatépetl, Tungurahua, Reventador, Batu Tara, Sakurajima, Ambrym

At the moment, there are no new eruptions from San Cristobal volcano and the seismic signal looks rather quiet as well. As INETER mentions in its latest bulletin, explosions could resume, as an elevated SO2 output suggests that more magma is under way.

Seismicity around Apoyeque volcano near Managua City has been decreasing, INETER reports. On 8 Sep, there were still 3 earthquakes of magnitudes between 1.7-2.5 at depths between 3.7-7.8 km while no quakes were recorded on 9 Sep. INETER keeps a close watch on this area as well.

Telica volcano has had some minor activity this month. A recent youtube video shows a small active lava pond at the bottom of the inner pit crater and newspapers report an increase of (fumarole) temperatures from 200 to over 400 deg C, as well as weak explosions and degassing accompanied by turbine-like sounds.

Fuego volcano is slowly restarting its regular strombolian-type activity: 4 weak explosions with ash plumes rising 300 m and some glowing material ejected to about 100 m were observed during the past observation period 8-9 Sep. Small avalanches of rocks towards the Tniluya and Ceniza Canyons were produced by material falling back from the explosions. Weak degassing sounds are heard.
The current seismogram suggests some increased activity this morning.

A larger number of small quakes is visible on today's seismic recording from Pacaya volcano, but there is no surface activity at the volcano.

Santiaguito volcano has been relatively calm. INSIVUMEH only reports some weak to moderate soundso of degassing and avalanches.

No change has occurred at Popocatépetl. CENAPRED recorded 28 weak explosions during 24 hours. When the volcano is not hidden in clouds, a strong steam plume is visible.

Glow from the crater of Reventador volcano was observed at night during periods of clear views.

Tungurahua volcano: While seismic activity remains moderate with some volcanic tremor present, there is currently only steaming from the volcano.

Little Sitkin volcano in the Aleutians seems to experience an increase in seismic activity, judging from the current seismogramm.

3 shallow quakes occurred beneath Krafla volcano in central Iceland yesterday. The largest was a magnitude 1.2 event at 1 km depth.

El Hierro After a decrease in earthquakes during the past few days, today, the number is up to 10 quakes so far again. The area remains the same, at depths of about 10 km, along a N-S trend in the western El Golfo area.

Batu Tara had explosions both yesterday and today and produced ash plumes reaching 7,000 ft altitude.

Sakurajima volcano has had on average 1-2 comparably weak explosions over the past 3 days, with maximum ash altitudes at about 8-10,000 ft (2.7-3 km).

A strong SO2 plume from Ambrym volcano on Vanuatu was visible on yesterday's NOAA satellite image, suggesting there is lots of fresh lava in the craters.
