Volcanic activity world-wide 17 September 2012: Gamalama, Popocatepetl, El Hierro, Stromboli, Fuego, San Cristobal, Santiaguito,Nevado del Ruiz, Batu Tara, Sakura-jima

Monday Sep 17, 2012 17:14 PM | BY: T

Volcanoes seem to be more active on weekends or towards the end of weeks, and lazier on Mondays... There has not been much activity really worth to report we could find.

An exception is a small new eruption at Gamalama volcano on Ternate Island in Indonesia and a further increase of activity can be observed at Popocatépetl volcano in Mexico. The frequency of (small) explosions has tripled to about 80 during a day. Some explosions produced small ash plumes and there is incandescence visible above the crater during the night. CENAPRED has not changed the alert level which remains at Yellow Phase 2 (orange on our own scale...).

The new seismic swarm at El Hierro continues at reduced pace with "only" 70 quakes so far today and magnitudes rarely exceeding M2. The area of epicenters has stabilized about 2 km NW of El Pinar in the central part of the island and at 20 km depth. Slight inflation of that area has become more evident as well.

Fuego volcano, Guatemala has come back to normal and relatively low activity, with sporadic explosions sending ash to 400-800 m height. The lava flows have stopped.
The other notoriously active volcano in the country, Santiaguito continues to produce occasional explosions ejecting ash columns to few hundred meters height and lava block avalanches, occasionally turning into small pyroclastic flows from the fronts of the active flows on the slopes of the dome.

San Cristobal volcano continued to produce elevated SO2 emissions measured at 3,054 tonnes per day on 15 Sep. INETER suggests in its latest press release yesterday evening that this increase might have been caused by a liberation of the internal conduits. Early yesterday, between 6:50 - 827 am local time, there was a pulse of tremor and 2 week earthquakes at 7:47 a.m. and 7:51 a.m. which could not be felt (see image from yesterday's update). Today, the seismicity has been rather low again.

Activity at Stromboli volcano remains at fluctuating low to medium levels with frequent but mostly small explosions every 5 minutes or so.

Satellite observations:
Batu Tara had NO explosion so far today detected on satellite images.

Nevado del Ruiz volcano is producing a strong SO2 plume visible on yesterday's NOAA satellite image.

Sakurajima volcano had only one more probably week explosion since yesterday's update.

News are dominated by the strong eruption of Fuego volcano, which has produced impressive and dangerous pyroclastic flows, 2-4 km tall ash columns reaching 24,000 ft (7.2 km) altitude, forced evacuation of 33,000 people yesterday. Today, explosive activity has decreased and the eruption changed to a more effusive style. Several lava flows are active on the southern flanks, threatening to cut local roads. ... [more]
