Volcanic activity world-wide 13 December 2012: Tobachik, Bagana, Popocatépetl, Fuego, Reventador, Sakurajima, Nisyros

Thursday Dec 13, 2012 15:09 PM | BY: T

The eruption from Tolbachik volcano in Kamchatka continues with lava fountains at the lower vent feeding very active lava flows, but KVERT noted that tremor levels were fluctuating. This could suggest that the magma supply has become less steady and the eruption might be approaching an end. Ash plumes from the eruption rose to up to 15,000 ft (4.5 km) altitude and are visible on satellite images.

Ash emissions were reported from Bagana volcano on Bougainville island in Papua New Guinea.

Activity of Popocatépetl volcano in Mexico has decreased to only 20 weak emissions with no or little ash content. A moderate steam plume is rising from the volcano.

2 weak explosions and mild strombolian activity was observed at Fuego volcano during the night; the lava flow has decreased to 150 m length.

Moderate activity continues at Reventador volcano in Ecuador. While direct observations are usually impossible due to cloud cover, seismic tremor pulses and explosion signals indicate frequent ash emissions and occasional mild explosions.

In Japan, Sakurajima volcano has been comparably calm as well with only few (about 1 / day average) small to moderate explosions recently.

Earthquakes have been more frequent recently at Nisyros volcano in Greece. 2 more quakes of magnitude 2.1 and 3.1 have occurred today close to the island at depths of about 10 and 20 km, respectively.

The eruption from Tolbachik volcano in Kamchatka continues. An article from the Ria Novosti news agency said that according to Russian seismologists, Tolbachik has been erupting a record of 1,200 tonnes or about 400 cubic meters of basaltic lava per second. If this number if correct, the current effusion rate would be significantly larger than the during the Great Tolbachik Fissure Eruption in 1975, when the effusion rate was about 40 m3/s on average. ... Another strong explosion occurred this morning at Lokon volcano in North Sulawesi (Indonesia). The eruption produced an ash plume about 3 km high and has been followed by several smaller explosions. This markes one of the most intense phases of activity during the year. ... [more]

While we were on expedition in Indonesia, the eruption from Tolbachik volcano in Kamchatka dominated the news. It counts certainly as one of the most remarkable eruptions this year. At the moment, the eruption continues at decreased intensity. Seismic activity has dropped during the past days, but the lower of the eruptive vents continues to feed a lava flow that has reached more than 10 km length in the relatively flat area at the eastern foot of the volcano and spreads there. ... On 1 November, the MODVOLC stated that thermal anomalies detected at Tolbachik volcano, Kamchatka indicated that the lava flows were now 15 km long. The data also indicated that the activity is now concentrated on the southern part of the fissure. ... [more]

The Tokyo VAAC reported that an eruption of Tolbachik, Kamchatka began at around 10:45 (GMT). An initial ash plume rose to a height of 10 KM; ash was seen in satellite images. ... [more]
