Etna (Sicily, Italy): (14 Jul) The volcano remains restless although no one knows what will come next. After a few weeks of "total silence", tiny ash emissions started again to occur from the SE crater since 9 July, volcanologist Dr Boris Behncke total reported on facebook. This activity, which could represent small but deep-seated explosive activity inside the SE crater's conduits, has been continuing over the past days, with a slight increase yesterday (see video below). Access to the summit craters for tours guided by authorized mountain guides has been allowed again. ... [read more] ... [show less] Other than that, there is intense degassing from the Voragine summit crater, which sometimes also produces beautiful smoke rings (steam ring vortexes), while the Bocca Nouva's crater floor continues to undergo slow concentric collapse (see images on facebook)
Vesuvius (Italy): During the past days, visitors to Naples could have thought that Vesuvius volcano was in plain eruption as a huge plume of smoke and steam rose over the Bay of Naples. Of course, it was not. Several large forest fires, which with near certainty were deliberately set by criminals, raged uncontrolled through the National Park for several days before Civil Protection could finally declare to have them under control today. Not only destroyed the fires an estimated 100 hectares of beautiful forest, damaged the park's headquarters and many other properties, but also killed countless animals, poisoned the air in the area and led to a gigantic pollution.
Poas (Costa Rica): (14 Jul) As a result of the recent eruptions, the crater lake has disappeared. At the place of the old lava dome near the center of the crater, a small pyroclastic cone has formed around the main emission point. Strong sulfur gas (SO2) emission is also occurring from other vents at the crater floor, indicating the presence of magma at shallow depth. ... [read more] ... [show less] During the month of June and this first half of July, the activity consisted of intermittent, passive ash eruptions of varying duration, with sometimes smaller quantities of solid materials including incandescent rock fragments ejected.
Piton de la Fournaise (La Réunion): (14 Jul) The volcano began erupting early this morning, making it the third eruption this year (after the ones in January and May). Following an increase of earthquakes over the past days, an intense seismic crisis started 22:20 local time last night - sign of the magma moving towards the surface. The eruption itself, when the magma reached the surface, began at around 00:50 this morning from a new fissure on the SSW slope of Dolomieu crater near the Chateau Fort cinder cone. ... [read more] ... [show less] A curtain of lava fountains from the eruptive fissure was active this morning, feeding a lava flow that rapidly traveled several hundred meters downslope.
Bromo volcano photos: Bromo is one of Indonesia's most visited volcanoes. It is the most active vent inside the huge Tengger caldera and erupts every few years.
