Agung (Bali): The situation at the volcano remains unchanged (no eruption), although the highest level of alert remains in place as no one is able to know whether or when it will erupt. According to a press article citing the Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG), the internal activity detected at the volcano has somewhat decreased during the past 2 days, but seismicity remains high. Hundreds of small earthquakes are being detected each day, with most of them related to rock fracturing as magma is intruding at shallow depth, pressurizing the rocks. ... [read more] ... [show less] PVMBG estimates that 150 million cubic meters of magma have accumulated in the recent recharging episode,- more than enough to cause a potentially very large explosive eruption (although it needs to be stressed out that estimates of this sort are typically very imprecise and that magma intrusions do not necessarily mean that there will be an eruption actually).
