Bezymianny (Central Kamchatka Depression): Volcanic Ash Advisory Center Tokyo (VAAC) issued the following report: VA CONTINUOUSLY OBS ON SATELLITE IMAGERY OBS VA DTG:20/1720Z ...20 Dec: A very large explosive eruption occurred at the volcano this morning (4am UTC, 4pm afternoon local time). An eruption column rose to estimated 50,000 ft (15 km, flight level 500) altitude and has been drifting northeast for about 85 km. KVERT rose the alert level of the volcano to red, but later lowered it back to orange as the eruption, presumably a vulcanian event (caused by sudden released of overpressure in the conduit), seems to have been short-lived.
