Ebeko (Paramushir Island): (4 Apr) Volcanic Ash Advisory Center Tokyo (VAAC) issued the following report: ERUPTION AT 20180404/2217Z FL090 EXTD NE REPORTED OBS VA DTG:04/2240Z

Kirishima (Kyushu): After a period of relative calm, a moderately powerful vulcanian explosion occurred from Shinmoedake's summit crater this morning at 03:42 local time.
It started with small ash emissions that lead to a sudden explosion producing an ash plume that rose several kilometers high. VAAC Tokyo estimated the height as approx. 13,000 ft (4.2 km) altitude, while the Japanese Meteorological Agency (who monitors the countries volcanoes, JMA) gives a much higher figure of 5 km above the summit (i.e. approx. 6.5 km altitude).

Sakurajima (Kyushu, Japan): Activity at the volcano remains at relatively high levels, similar to what we observed last week. During the past days, vulcanian explosions have been occurring at rates of 2-4 per day, increasing the total number for recorded explosions (*) this year to 32 so far with half of them having occurred during the past 10 days. In addition, the volcano has been showing weak to strong ash emissions most of the time.

(*): The "explosions" counted are being referred to as defined by JMA, who count eruptive events as explosion only when an associated air pressure wave reaches a certain threshold. Passive, although often strong ash emissions do not count in this scheme.
