Etna (Sicily, Italy): The volcano continues to show signs of unrest. A swarm of shallow small earthquakes has been occurring under the SW flank during the past days and seems to be increasing.
The strongest shock so far was a magnitude 3.5 event at very shallow depth 7 km north of Ragalna about 5 hours ago (at 06:10 am local time), felt as weak shaking in the villages on Etna's southern and western flanks.

Shiveluch (Kamchatka): Explosive activity continues. Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) Tokyo warned about a volcanic ash plume that rose up to estimated 18000 ft (5500 m) altitude or flight level 180 and is moving at 20 kts in N direction.

It seems a new surge of fresh magma is currently arriving at the lava dome, prompting a phase of rapid growth. Several glowing lobes can be seen on the webcam during night time.
Ash emissions by explosions and rockfalls, triggering small to moderate pyroclastic flows accompany this activity. Ash plumes rising to approx. 18,000 ft (5.5 km) have been near continuous, and explosions sending ash to the tropopause in approx. 10-12 km altitude such as the last one on 30 Dec are also no rarity and could occur again any time.
