Udina (Kamchatka, Russia): A recent paper has brought to attention a long-term increase in seismicity under this long-dormant volcano (it is unknown when it last erupted), attributed to new magma intruding into the re-activated plumbing system.
The unrest began in December 2017 and a temporary seismic network was installed in May-July 2018; over 500 earthquakes were detected, centred in an elliptical cluster more than 5km below the surface.

Midagahara (Honshu): The previous article is incorrect. The alert level is not at an elevated state. JMA published a "volcanic forecast" because the volcano is now seismically monitored- as several other volcanoes in Japan have become in the last few years as the monitoring operations are expanded. This means that the JMA alert level system can now be applied to this volcano- it has been assigned Level 1- normal.

Once again a very powerful explosion has occurred- at around 09:30 UTC today- sending an ash column high into the atmosphere, and producing large pyroclastic flows. According to the latest report from Darwin VAAC, the eruption is continuing, with an ash plume rising to 9km (30,000ft).
