Karangetang (Siau Island, Sangihe Islands, Indonesia): The activity at the volcano remains high and has little changed since it started at the end of July. A group of VolcanoDiscovery is currently on location during our Volcanoes & Spices tour observed the active lava flow from the south crater as well as vigorous strombolian activity from the northern crater. According to expedition leader Andi, there were even "lava fountains" from it, something Karangetang's northern crater has often produced in the past as well, but still extremely rare to witness from close.
The lava flow is located on the western slope and generates frequent incandescent avalanches, which have remained confined mostly to the upper slopes.
Ibu (Halmahera, Indonesia): (21 Aug) Explosive activity continues. Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) Darwin warned about a volcanic ash plume that rose up to estimated 8000 ft (2400 m) altitude or flight level 080 and is moving at 15 kts in W direction.

It started at 07:55 WIB local time and lasted 1 minute 47 seconds. It produced thick jets of steam and dark ash, typical of water-magma interaction (as the vent is still submerged), reaching a height of approx. 450 m.
