Reykjanes (Reykjanes peninsula (SW Iceland)): IMO reports: An inflation has been detected since January 21st and is centred just west of Mt. Thorbjorn on Reykjanes peninsula. The inflation is unusually rapid, around 3-4 mm per day and has accumulated to 2 cm to date. It has been detected both on continuous GPS stations and in InSAR images. The inflation is most likely a sign of magma accumulation at a depth of just a few km. If magma accumulation is causing the inflation, the accumulation is very small, with the first volume estimate is around 1 million cubic meters.
Earthquakes under Taal volcano during the past days
A state of uncertainty has been declared. The Aviation Colour Code has been raised to Yellow for Reykjanes.
Ebeko (Paramushir Island): (26 Jan) Volcanic Ash Advisory Center Tokyo (VAAC) issued the following report: ERUPTION AT 20200126/2304Z FL060 EXTD SE REPORTED OBS VA DTG:26/2320Z
Aso (central Kyushu, Japan): Volcanic Ash Advisory Center Tokyo (VAAC) issued the following report: POSS ACTIVITY CONT. VA CLD UNKNOWN AT 20200127/1200Z
Sakurajima (Kyushu, Japan): Volcanic Ash Advisory Center Tokyo (VAAC) issued the following report: EXPLODED AT 20200127/1355Z OVER FL060 EXTD SE OBS VA DTG:27/1350Z
Taal (Luzon, Philippines): The activity of the volcano has continued to slowly decrease. During the past week, it has been characterized by "weak to moderate emission of white steam-laden plumes 50 to 800 meters high that drifted northeast."
In its latest bulletin, the volcano observatory reports sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions dropped to an average of 87 tonnes/day. Seismic activity remains elevated, but also decreased compared to 1-2 weeks ago: "The Taal Volcano Network recorded one hundred seventy (170) volcanic earthquakes including four (4) low-frequency earthquakes."
"Alert Level 3 is maintained over Taal Volcano. DOST-PHIVOLCS reminds the public that sudden steam-driven and even weak phreatomagmatic explosions, volcanic earthquakes, ashfall, and lethal volcanic gas expulsions can still occur and threaten areas within Taal Volcano Island and nearby lakeshores. DOST-PHIVOLCS recommends that entry into the Taal Volcano Island as well as into areas over Taal Lake and communities west of the island within a seven (7) km radius from the Main Crater must be strictly prohibited." (PHIVOLCS)
Semeru (East Java, Indonesia): Volcanic Ash Advisory Center Darwin (VAAC) issued the following report: DISCRETE VA EMISSIONS TO FL140, LAST OBS MOV S AT 27/0050Z
Dukono (Halmahera): Explosive activity continues. Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) Darwin warned about a volcanic ash plume that rose up to estimated 7000 ft (2100 m) altitude or flight level 070 .
The full report is as follows: CONTINUOUS VA TO FL070 EXT TO N OBS VA DTG:27/1315Z to 7000 ft (2100 m)
Cleveland (Aleutian Islands, Alaska): (27 Jan) AVO report that no significant activity was observed in seismic data over the past day. Elevated surface temperatures were observed in one satellite image, and no activity was observed in cloudy web camera images.
AVO add that episodes of lava effusion and explosions can occur without advance warning. Explosions from Cleveland are normally short duration and only present a hazard to aviation in the immediate vicinity of the volcano. Larger explosions that present a more widespread hazard to aviation are possible, but are less likely and occur less frequently.
Santiaguito (Guatemala): (27 Jan) INSIVUMEH report 1 to 3, weak and moderate explosions per hour that eject ash columns to an approximate height of 3200 meters (10499 feet) above sea level, which disperse to the southwest at a distance of approximately 1 kilometer. Weak avalanches on the southeast flanks of the Caliente dome. Ashfall accumulating on the edifice perimeter.
Pacaya (Guatemala): (27 Jan) INSIVUMEH report the continued strombolian activity occurring from the Mackenney cone, with ejecta been thrown at heights between 10 and 75 meters. Two lava flows are reported; one flowing in the northwest direction towards the Cerro Chino and another flowing to the south. Seismic stations record tremor associated with the rise of magma and the presence of gases, as well as occasional explosions.
Fuego (Guatemala): Volcanic Ash Advisory Center Washington (VAAC) issued the following report: VA RPRTD BY AIRCRAFT.
INSIVUMEH report 8 to 14, weak to moderate explosions per hour, ejecting ash columns at heights between 4500 and 4700 meters (14764 to 15420 feet) above sea level, which dispersed approximately 15 to 25 kilometers to the south and southwest. Ashfall accumulated in areas of La Rochela, El Rodeo, El Zapote and Trinidad.
Sangay (Ecuador): Explosive activity continues. Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) Washington warned about a volcanic ash plume that rose up to estimated 20000 ft (6100 m) altitude or flight level 200 .
The full report is as follows: CONT VA SEEN IN SAT. to 20000 ft (6100 m)
Reventador (Ecuador): Volcanic Ash Advisory Center Washington (VAAC) issued the following report: VA NOT SEEN IN SAT.
Sabancaya (Peru): Explosive activity continues. Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) Buenos Aires warned about a volcanic ash plume that rose up to estimated 24000 ft (7300 m) altitude or flight level 240 and is moving at 5 kts in S direction.
The full report is as follows: continuous ash emissions to 24000 ft (7300 m)
