Elevated explosive activity continues at the remote volcano. Ash plumes up to 12,000 ft (3.6 km) altitude were spotted on satellite data by VAAC Darwin.

Medium sized pyroclastic flow reaching the lower slopes of Sinabung today (Image: Sutopo Purwo Nugroho/BNPB)
More and increasingly larger (and hence more dangerous) pyroclastic flows are being formed by the growing lava dome of the volcano. These "flows" are hot turbulent avalanches of hot blocks and ash in suspension with hot gas and air, that can travel down at great speed the slopes of the mountain, typically following the paths of valleys.
Tue, 31 Dec 2013, 09:04Small, brief explosions were detected at the volcano yesterday evening (21:29 UTC or 12:29 AKST) and this morning at 4:06 UTC (19:06 AKST local time), USGS reported.

Eruption plume from today's explosion at San Miguel (photo: La Prensa Grafica)
The new eruption that occurred at the volcano Sunday (29 Dec) morning at 10:50 am local time has so far been an isolated single explosion of vulcanian type (accumulated pressure ejecting the plug in the conduit). Current seismic activity is low, but more activity could follow.

Weak lava fountain at the New SE crater
: The 21st paroxysm at the New SE crater which started last evening is still going on although it has decreased a bit. Until now, the eruption has been rather weak with no sustained tall lava fountains as during most of the paroxysms. Instead, the New SE crater continues to produce loud, spectacular near-continuous strombolian-type jets (or low, pulsating fountains) and explosions of lava bubbles. The eruption so far:

Pyroclastic flow from Sinabung this evening (photo: #D_Lingga / Twitter)
The growing lava dome has started to produce (extremely dangerous) pyroclastic flows, as parts of the unstable mass of the viscous lava have now overtopped the crater the dome had been growing inside.

Strombolian activity at New SE crater (Etna-Web webcam)
Etna (Sicily, Italy): Activity is rapidly increasing towards the 21st paroxysm. The New SE crater produces near continuous bright strombolian explosions accompanied by loud explosion sounds. Tremor is rising steeply.

This morning at 11:16 (local time), an ash explosion occurred from the New SE crater, accompanied by a rise in tremor. This is similar to the precursory activity of the recent past paroxysms and probably means that the magma column inside the cone's conduit has started to rise and began to clear its way by sporadic, but potentially quite powerful explosions.

Suwanose-jima seen from the NE (JMA webcam)
Bright glow from intense strombolian activity, or perhaps even the presence of a small lava lake or lava fountains, are visible on the JMA webcam on Nakanoshima island to the NE. VAAC Tokyo reports continuous low-level ash emissions.

The new lava dome of Sinabung (colored lines showing its extension on 24, 25, and 26 Dec) (VSI)
VSI confirmed that a new lava dome (a mass of viscous magma accumulating at the vent) has made its appearance on the northern crater of the volcano. It had a height of 56 meters and diameter of 105 meters on 26 Dec. Its volume was estimated to about 1 million cu meters, and the growth rate at 3.5 m3/second.

Ash emission from Etna's NE crater this evening
Etna (Sicily, Italy): The volcano remains restless. Ash emissions have resumed (or continue) at the NE crater. Tremor is fluctuating, but there's a slow overall rising trend.

Glow from Suwanose-jima volcano this evening
The volcano's activity has picked up. Today, VAAC Tokyo reported at least 3 explosions with low-level ash plumes. Bright glow from the crater area is visible at night, suggesting elevated strombolian to vulcanian-type activity. Here is a video of today's activity:

Explosion from Shiveluch's lava dome this morning (afternoon in Kamchatka)
A relatively large explosive eruption occurred this afternoon at the lava dome of the volcano, producing a pyroclastic flow and an ash plume rising to over 27,000 ft (8 km) altitude (at 03:07 UTC):

Steaming Sinabung volcano this morning
The volcano has been relatively calm and only produced a steam plume sometimes mixed with ash, but no new significant explosions. Local media talk about a new lava dome spotted at the summit, but evidence (weak red glow at night and blurred photos etc) is still very weak and should be confirmed.

Gas (+ash?) plume from Suwanose-Jima this morning
A small explosion occurred this morning (JST time) at the volcano; VAAC Tokyo reported an ash plume at 4,000 ft (1,2 km) altitude.
Fri, 27 Dec 2013, 07:22Explosive activity continues to be elevated. Several ash plumes to estimated 10,000 ft (3 km) altitude were spotted on satellite imagery by VAAC Darwin over the past days.
Fri, 27 Dec 2013, 07:19
After several months with little activity, an ash plume was spotted again by VAAC Darwin yesterday, with an estimated altitude of 10,000 ft (3 km). The new lava dome probably continues to produce occasional collapse events and explosions.
Fri, 27 Dec 2013, 07:15Strombolian to mild vulcanian explosions continue at the volcano. VAAC Tokyo reported an ash plume at 15,000 ft (4,5 km) altitude drifting NW this morning.

Activity has picked up at the volcano again. An ash plume was reported this morning by VAAC Tokyo to 17,000 ft (5 km) altitude extending north. Webcam images show a significant steam plume which possibly contains ash.

The two islands of Nishino-Jima (t) and Niijima (b) have merged.
The recently born new Niijima island merged with the main island Nishino-Jima yesterday. Both are in fact two summits of the same volcanic edifice. Activity continues to enlarge the new land by lava flows and occasional strombolian explosions.

Based on information from JMA, the Tokyo VAAC reported explosions from Suwanose-jima during 26-30 December. Explosions during 27-28 December generated plumes that rose to an altitude over 1.5 km (5,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifted SE.

Wed, 25 Dec 2013, 06:00KVERT reported that during 20-27 December a newer lava dome extruded onto the NW part of Shiveluch's older lava dome. Lava-dome extrusion was accompanied by hot avalanches, incandescence, and fumarolic activity. Moderate ash explosions generated ash plumes that rose to altitudes of 4-5 km (13,100-16,400) a.s.l.
