Strombolian explosion from a vent at 2800m a.s.l. on the May 13 eruptive fissure (Etna volcano)

Our team member Marco Fulle who just visited Stromboli volcano with a small group reports strong, candle-like eruptions from the NE vent in the central crater of Stromboli volcano, that reach 300 m height. A similar eruption style
had been present during much of 2006 and sometimes in 2007.

After last week's intense series of larger ash eruptions, such as on 10 May, Tunguarahua seems to be quieting down and has not registered any major explosions since May 11.

Anak Krakatau continues to produce small ash-rich strombolian explosions. An indirect report from about one week ago about "lava reaching the sea", i.e. lava flows, need to be verified as it cannot be confirmed from other sources so far. More likely, ejected incandescent blocks are occasionally reaching the sea.

Lava and ash emissions continue although at very low levels. The violent fissure eruption that started on May 13 from an originally 600 m long east-trending fissure parting from the NE base of the SE crater at around 2900 m elevation decreased surprisingly quickly in intensity. It seems to be coming to a soon end, although a weak emission of lava continues at present. ...more
