Gas flight conducted on 30 April over White Island volcano (image: GeoNet)
This episode is likely caused by a series of low-energy subterranean explosions. Similar periods of activity were observed in mid-February and early-mid March, returning to typical low levels shortly afterwards.
An observation flight conducted on 30 April confirmed no ejected material from this seismic activity – unlike in previous episodes when ejected material was seen within metres from the active vent. No observations of changes were seen on the island's webcams.
Gas and steam emission plumes continue at stable levels since March.
The Volcanic Alert Level remains at 1 and the Aviation Colour Code remains at Green.

During an overflight on 30 April scientists did not observe new deposits near the active vent or thermal anomalies at the active vent area. Gas-emission rates had been relatively unchanged since March. ... Read all
