White Island volcano (New Zealand) activity update: Significant increase in seismic tremor, police investigation

The latest update reports a strong, sustained increase in seismic tremor beginning around 04:00 NZDT Wednesday (15:00 UTC Tuesday), indicating that the system remains under pressure. This is accompanied by energetic steaming and mud jetting.

The threat of further explosions persists; the island is still in a dangerous state. The volcano remains at Alert Level 3 and Aviation Colour Code Orange.

Thoughts go out to the families of those tragically killed; the survivors with serious injuries; the rescuers who bravely and selflessly risked their own lives to save others; and to the scientists at GeoNet for their dedication to their vital work.

Also, a police investigation is underway regarding the fact that tour operators continued to allow people onto the island after the Alert Level was raised last month. New Zealand PM Jacinda Ardern said in Parliament that questions must be asked and answered.
