A ship captain reported hissing noises and the bubbling up of waves resembling the rise of boiling water in 1824. This event was considered to have been an eruption by the Catalog of Active Volcanoes of the World (Neumann van Padang et al., 1967), although few additional details are known. The location is on the broad Sierra Leone Rise, a submarine high between the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and the west coast of Africa.---
