A new earthquake swarm is occurring at the Meakandake cone so JMA has raised the alert level to 2. A similar event occurred 3 years ago. The last eruption was in 2008.

Recent earthquakes under Meakan volcano (JMA)
A swarm of shallow volcanic earthquakes under the Ponmachineshiri crater of Mt Meakan volcano has been occurring since yesterday. This event triggered the Japanese Meteorological Agency (JMA) to raise the volcanic alert status to 2 (eruption alert, on a scale of 1-5) today. ...more

On 17 November the alert level for Akan volcano was rised to level 3. There have been recorded tremors and a cloud that was the result of an ash eruption that covered the crater rim with black ash. Also ballsitic lithics were deposed around the crater.

Meakandake volcano in Hokkaido, Japan, erupted shortly on Tuesday afternoon, March 21, 2006. The volcano spewed a small amount of ash and caused a short lahar travelling through a ravine on the upper slopes of the snow-capped volcano.
