Satellite data analysis by the MIROVA team indicated that thermal anomalies over Fentale crater were visible during 13-14 January and progressively increased in size at least through 0020 on 21 January (local time). No cause of these anomalies has been identified. A visible satellite image showed a possible gas plume over the crater. Read all

Seismicity and deformation data acquired from satellite radar images indicated that a magmatic intrusion began in late September 2024 in the Afar Region between the Fentale caldera and Dofen volcano. Interferograms, which show upward and downward land movement using sequenced satellite radar data, indicated that a magmatic intrusion aligned along the central to northern part of an axis connecting these two locations began in late September 2024, according to the UK Centre for Observation and Modelling of Earthquakes, Volcanoes and Tectonics (COMET). Fantale volcano update: Earthquakes picking up again

After two days of relative calm, quakes have been picking up again in the area. A magnitude 5.1 quake hit the Awash region this morning.

Over the past 36 hours, earthquakes have decreased in strength and numbers. Without more up-to-date deformation data it is impossible to say whether it means that the underlying activity, supposedly an ongoing magma intrusion has slowed, or that simply intruding magma has less obstacles now after the series of violent M5+ quakes until a few days ago. Earthquakes in the Afar region today, recorded by the FURI seismic station 200 km to the west of Awash (larger signals correspond to mag 4-5 quakes, plus many smaller ones visible)

There are no signs of the activity slowing down. The local newspaper Addis Standard reported that over 30 houses have been destroyed by the recent quakes and hundreds of people have left their homes as precaution and are either camping outside or fleeing to other areas. Read all

Over the past few days, seismic activity in the Awash area has picked up significantly. At least 5 quakes of magnitudes around 4.5 have been registered in the past 48 hours alone. Since early September 2024, a series of earthquakes has been shaking the area between Fantale and Dofen volcano in the Awash area of central Ethiopia, about 150 km northeast from the capital Addis. Several quakes have reached magnitudes of up to almost 5 and destroyed many houses. Read all
