Background
Kuroshima is located in the back-arc region of the Northern Ryuku Arc Segment. It has been K-Ar dated at 1.03 +/- 0.13 million years ago (Ono et al. 1981; Shinjo et al., 2000). Other than the large amount of limestone on the island, Kuroshima is a basaltic-andesitic stratovolcano characterized by an abundance of parasitic monogenetic cinder cones (Joshima et al., 1978; Shinjo et al., 2000).---
