Sempu is a statovolcano within a 3 km wide caldera containing an explosion crater (Kawah Masem maar) of 450x350 m diameter in the SW part of the caldera and contains a crater lake. There are no confirmed historical eruptions from Sempu.
Sulfur has been a site of sulfur extraction from fumarolic areas in the maar since 1938.
