Zoom onto the expanding ejected plug of the explosion; only few of the blocks are actually glowing red. At night, this means that most blocks won't be visible! (Photo: Tom Pfeiffer)

Sakurajima, Japan, July 2013: The largest explosion observed from close occurred at 23h33 (14:33 UTC) - although the eruption was not mentioned in Tokyo's VVAC, the ash plume was the at least as large as the larger ones previously observed. The eruption lasted more than 2 minutes, starting with an initial explosion and continuous lava and ash fountains afterwards. The plume darkened the sky of the whole eastern area for the rest of the night. (Photo: Tom Pfeiffer)

Ash-rich vulcanian-type explosions producing tall ash plumes, were often accompanied by loud bangs. Such powerful explosions seemed to occur in sets of 5-10 events, usually spaced 3-5 minutes, approximately every 6-10 hrs during our observation time from 4-8 June 09. (Photo: Tom Pfeiffer)
