The eroded central plug of Mount Thielsen forms a prominent summit spire known as the "Lightning Rod of the Cascades." The heavily eroded volcano is Potassium-Argon dated about 0.29 million years ago (Sherrod, in Wood and Kienle 1990). Pre-Thielsen shield volcanoes lie to the east and NE and pyroclastic cones to the south and SW.
